Living in the Shadow (of the Colossus) – Part One

Shadow of the Colossus is a game that I’ve been told I needed to play, as I have personally never touched the title. The game originally came out on the PS2 in 2005 to great applause, even though the game ran at around 16 frames per second. The reason for it was the scale of the game.

The game has been rated so well that it had been remade once before on the PS3 bundled with a copy of ICO. but for the purpose of this review, I shall be playing the brand new PS4 version.

The concept of the game (as far as I know) is you are a horny boy who wants to sleep with a girl. The issue with this is the girl is asleep (or dead. IDUNNO.) you take her to a temple to wake her up and a big voice says it will do it, but you need to kill 16 ginormous beings called colossi.

The catch of this, of course, is the beings are relatively peaceful. So you climb up the colossus, find its weak point and STAB IT TO DEATH! Then you feel bad. Then you get guilty. Then a big smoke monster comes out and attacks you.

So far I am halfway through the game. 8 colossi taken down by myself, and so far I can vouch for the beauty in this remake. The game really makes me want to get a 4k TV and a PS4 Pro just to see the wonder of it. The massive landscapes toppled with the huge creatures are breathtaking.

My favourite so far is the bird. The boss takes place in a lake inside a cave system. It comes flying in and lands on a large tower. Because of them being quite peaceful it just ignores you. I decided to shoot it with some arrows off the edge of the lake on a small platform. The bird looked at me, then within a few seconds it dropped off the tower and came flying towards me. As this takes places a little bit into the game, I was able to quickly work out what i had to do. I noticed it had fur on its back and the front of its wings so I jumped at the last minute and grabbed the bird. As i held onto the bird, as it flew up into the air i had to crawl around on its back and stab it in a few places until i was able to take it down.

So far the game isn’t difficult, just time consuming to get between the different colossi as the world is so large.

I’m not going to give my final review until part 2
