Magic Month: Handheld Potter and the Frustration Stone

I can always remember when I first got my Game Boy Advance. It was a transparent console from Electronics Boutique (known as GAME for all you young ones) and it was amazing. I loved it. The first game I had with it was Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone.

As mentioned in my previous review, my main inspiration for Magic Month comes from recently listening to the Harry Potter Audio-books. Another reason was my list of games I want to re-buy that I regret getting rid of as a dumb child. One of these games was my beloved Harry Potter and the Philosophers stone.

So stating that I will admit I don’t currently own a copy of this game so I’ve been using a Retron 5 with a Rom using a fake copy of sapphire as a placeholder. I am planning on getting it at some point (but at the moment £4 is way too much to spend. #broke. Ill happily take a donation of a copy if anyone has it)

One of the things I remember about this game was how difficult it was. If you die during a challenge you have to start from the beginning again. I also remembered how the game took more after the books than the games, including characters like peeves and using hand-drawn artist renditions for the cut-scenes instead of the movie actors. Another thing I remembered was the game contained elements found in the first 3 books instead of just the first, most namely the Flobberworms which were not actually mentioned until the Prisoner of Azkaban.

My memories were correct, and this game is brutally hard in a selfish and vindictive way. If you die at any point during a challenge you have to start again. Because of the frustrating time I was having, I decided to make a virtual console version of it on my 3DS. I then encountered an issue. I couldn’t save the game.

Time to learn to speedrun it!

I attempted to finish the entire game in an hours lunch I had at work. I got to the 3rd challenge, finished the challenge and then fell off a ledge right at the end. I ended up rage quitting.

Maybe I’ll give it another go at some point, preferably on a system that has save states so I cant rage quit, instead just spam the save button.
