Magic Month: Quidditch while we are ahead

My current “thing” is binge listening to the Harry Potter series. I had read them all when I was younger, and slowly as they got released but I felt I was left out of the conversations Chloe would have with her sister so I needed a refresher.

I’m going to be writing a series of blog posts over the next month covering every single book in game form, on a different platform for each. I shall be starting with a wildcard that I have never played. The Quidditch world cup on the PS2.

I was never brought up with a PS2, and my computer at the time would not have been powerful enough for me to give this game a go, so this was the first time I got to play this surprisingly fantastic title.

Harry Potter: Quidditch world cup is a “sports” game involving the fictional sport called, weirdly enough, Quidditch. The game consists of 7 players on a team who fly on brooms.  3 are called Chasers. These are the players who attempt to throw a ball-like object called a “Quaffle” through some hoops on either end of the pitch. 2 other players are called Beaters. The Beaters have bats who hit flying balls that try and knock people off their brooms called Bludgers. Finally, there is the Seeker. The Seeker has to find a tiny golden ball called a snitch that flies super fast. Oh, and a Keeper who guards the hoops but nobody cares about them.

If I Sirius’ly had to explain that then this is going to be fun.

The game starts with learning the ropes at Hogwarts by playing as a house of your choice. Once you beat all 3 other houses you then get access to the world cup tournament. I chose England because I’m a super patriotic person (but also because i couldn’t play as Bulgaria till later in the game.)

The gameplay is quite simple. You play the game as Chasers for most of the time. The game plays very similar to FIFA games. Passing the quaffle up the players till you can shoot at the hoops. As you play the game you get given extra one-off abilities to use including dodging, to dodge bludgers, a Beater button to whack a Bludger at an opponent, a special attack to tackle another player in a cool way and finally a team attack which does a special animation and a guaranteed score. Sometimes twice depending on the team.

After about 10 minutes the gameplay changes to that of the Seeker. The Seeker gameplay involves flying along a golden ribbon that gives you a boost bar. You can then boost to the Snitch and catch it which gives you 150 points (15 scores) and end the game.

It’s a lot of fun. I really do recommend it, and i want a newer version with more content and online play maybe.

next up, Philosophers stone for the Game Boy Advance
